David Laing Book Collecting Prize

The University's Heritage Collections runs an annual competition, with a prize of £500, for the best student collection of books or other printed or written materials.

https://Applications for 2025-26 can be submitted from Monday 12th January 2026.  The closing date is 9am Monday 23rd March.  

The David Laing Book Collecting Prize aims to encourage collecting by recognising a collection formed by a student.   If you collect books, or any other written material and are a matriculated student, we invite you to submit an essay about your collection, to be in with a chance of winning £500.  The prize is offered in honour of David Laing (1793 -1878), the distinguished antiquarian, collector and librarian who bequeathed his important collection of manuscripts and other materials to the University of Edinburgh in 1878.
