The Marion Lochhead Papers (Coll-809) include working materials for most of Lochhead's major publications and an extensive archive of press-cuttings. There are manuscript or proof materials for ten published monographs from The Scots Household in the Eighteenth Century (1948) through to Magic and Witchcraft of the Borders (1984). These cover subjects as diverse as social, literary, and ecclesiastical history, biographies, studies of children's literature, and anthologies of folk tales. There are also unpublished monographs on Margaret Oliphant, Saint Madeleine-Sophie Barat, and 19th-century Edinburgh. There also typescripts of journal articles, radio talks, essays, and folk-tales. There are also two boxes of newspaper cuttings (Gen 2156/4-5) archiving the reception of Lochhead’s work and Lochhead’s own contributions to the Scottish press from the 1930s through to the 1970s. The latter include poems, book reviews, and articles on a wide range of literary and historical topics, with particular emphasis on Scottish women’s writing. The Lochhead papers are an invaluable resource, not only for Lochhead scholars but also for researchers interested in Scottish women's writing, nineteenth-century Scottish literature, children's writing, folk tales, domestic history, and the history of the Scottish Episcopal Church.
