The Western General Hospital Library has been converted to a self-service Student Study Area from 01 September 2025. The Student Study Area provides study space, with PCs and printing available in the adjacent Quiet Study Room. 

 What has happened to the book collection? 

Library collections were reviewed to identify items with significant recent usage and items which are on Resource Lists. These items have been moved to the Main Library or other University library sites to ensure they continue to be available as required. Remaining books have been moved to the University Collections Facility (UCF) and are not immediately be available for request; access is provided via the Interlibrary Loans service. 

 Where can I get help or pick up a University card? 

The EdHelp service desk has closed at the Western General Hospital Library.  Help is available through the EdHelp online service (including AskEdHelp the 24x7 self-help chatbot) and at EdHelp service desks in our other 9 libraries.  University are delivered by internal mail, or made available for collection at our EdHelp service desks.   


Staff and students of the University of Edinburgh have full access. 

Access to the library is also available to other users.  Please check up-to-date information on the Joining the Library web pages before visiting any library.

The Western General Hospital Library currently is not accessible for those unable to evacuate by stairs, and alternative provisions are available.


The Western General Hospital Library is located in the Medical Education Centre (MEC) on the 3rd floor above the Outpatients entrance. When you arrive on the third floor, turn right and enter the Southern section of the MEC.

Printing, copying and scanning - EdPrint

There are MFDs (multi-function devices), on which University of Edinburgh staff and students can print (from Library PCs or from own devices), scan and photocopy. Both black & white (mono) and colour MFDs are available.

Food and drink
  • Covered drinks are allowed throughout the library.
  • No food is allowed anywhere in the library.  Food includes biscuits, crisps and other packaged snacks.

     

Toilets

Male and female toilets are available inside the library. 

Accessible toilets: The nearest accessible toilet is located in the Medical Education Centre, on the same side of the building as the Library. From the Library, the accessible toilet is towards the end of the corridor, the other side of the lockers.


There are a number of study spaces available in the Western General Hospital Library.

There are 7 workstations with University networked PCs and 3 NHS Net computers in the Quiet Study Room located opposite to the Library. 

There are also two computer labs in Medical Education Centre (MEC).

Quiet and Silent study 

The library is a designated quiet study space with 14 study desks with access to power sockets and the University wireless network for personal laptop computers.

 

Accessible study space

There is an adjustable height desk available in the Library and also one adjustable height desk located in the Quiet Study Room.
