Moray House Library

Moray House Library holds books, journals and other resources in subject areas relevant to the School of Education and Sport, focusing on Education, Psychology, English language teaching, Physical education, Sports sciences, Leisure studies, Recreational management, and more.

The library also houses a collection of children's books and Special Collections relating to the history of Scottish education.

Please remember to carry your University card with you when you are on campus. You need it to access the libraries.

University of Edinburgh staff and students are automatically members of the library. 

We are also pleased to welcome external students, researchers and visitors to the Library but please be aware that during exam periods access may be restricted. To join the Library, please email us at library.account@ed.ac.uk

Moray House Library is situated in Dalhousie Land, St John Street. Enter the Library through the main doors of the building.

The library entrance is on Floor 1, where you can also find the EdHelp Desk, the Reserve section and our main book collection. There are multiple study desks with and without Open Access PCs as well as a printing, scanning and photo-copying device.

Floor 2 and the ground floor are accessed from Floor 1 via separate staircases. 

Floor 2 hosts more study spaces, including group study rooms.

The ground floor features our children's books collection, journal stacks, study spaces and another multi-function device for printing, scanning and copying. Our special collections room can be accessed upon request.

Borrowing and returning books

If you need to borrow or return books, there are two self-service machines on Floor 1. If you have any problems please visit the EdHelp desk.

Printing, copying and scanning - EdPrint

There are MFDs (multi-function devices) on Ground and Floor 1. University of Edinburgh staff and students can print (from Library PCs or from own devices), scan and photocopy in colour or monochrome. 

Other library users are able to pay for photocopying services only - please ask at the EdHelp desk for information or email library.account@ed.ac.uk

Card Services

If you have lost or damaged your University card, or if it is expired, you can get a replacement at the EdHelp desk on Floor 1.

Food and drink
  • Eating is not allowed anywhere in the library.
  • Covered drinks are allowed throughout the library.
  • A water fountain can be found in the Floor 1 entrance area next to the toilets.
  • Hot water is not available in the library itself, but is available in Paterson's Land rooms LG.12 and LG.13

Male, female, and unisex accessible toilets are in Floor 1 entrance area. 


The entire library (with the exception of the Group Study Rooms) is designated as individual, silent study due to its open plan design.

Moray House Library has 140 study spaces.
  • 65 open access PCs plus 2 study room PCs
  • 75 workspaces with power sockets
Group study - for students only

There are two group study rooms on the Floor 2 balcony. The rooms each seat 8 people and are equipped with PCs. Group study rooms at Moray House Library can be booked via MyEd. The rooms can be found under the Building name, 'Dalhousie Land'.

British Sign Language support

A video relay service is available, enabling British Sign Language users to contact public bodies and vice-versa.

This service operates from 8am to 12 midnight, 7 days a week.
