All registered staff and students of the University of Edinburgh are automatically entitled to borrow books for free from the University's libraries. Borrowing books is also open to other categories of library users. University of Edinburgh students and staff are automatically made members of the Library when they register with the University. The University of Edinburgh card is also a library card with the library barcode on the front. Official Visitors to the University may be entitled to borrow books for free from the University's libraries. The decision to grant this is made by the School or department who registers the Official Visitor.
