The Lady Smith of Kelvin Veterinary Library holds the University’s current veterinary collections and also collections to support the Roslin Institute and the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems.

University of Edinburgh staff and students are automatically members of all our libraries, including the Lady Smith of Kelvin Veterinary Library. Please remember to bring your ID card to access our libraries.

We are also pleased to welcome external students, researchers and visitors to the Library, subject to the access restrictions above. In advance of a visit in person please email us at library.account@ed.ac.uk.

Joining the library


The Veterinary Library is located within the Teaching Building of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the Easter Bush campus. Easter Bush is located eight miles to the south of Edinburgh city centre, near Penicuik. 

Easter Bush is directly served by several local bus routes. Parking facilities are provided for our visitors and clients. A permit is not required but visitors and clients should register their vehicle at the nearest reception. 

The Veterinary Library has wheelchair access and disabled parking located in the car park outside the main entrance door.

The Veterinary Library entrance is on the first floor, above the cafe area. There is lift and stair access to this level. 

The Library provides study desks, including a height adjustable desk and some informal seating.

Food and drink

Covered drinks are allowed throughout the library. No food is allowed anywhere in the library. Food includes biscuits, crisps and other packaged snacks.

There are two cafes at the Easter Bush campus, Dolly's and The View. Both are open during term time and non-term time.

Toilets

There is an accessible toilet on the same floor of the Library but not in the library itself. The toilet is right hand side transfer.


Quiet and silent study

The Veterinary Library is a quiet study space with 60 study spaces, most of which have power sockets and 10 soft seating chairs for informal study.

There is also dedicated silent study space adjacent to the Library which offers 32 study spaces and 10 workstations with PCs.

There are 6 open access computers and 1 standing quick use computer in the Library. 

The printing/photocopying/scanning facilities are available in the Library and in the Study Landscape. 

Accessible study space

There is an adjustable height desk with an accessible PC with assistive technology located by the tutorial room 1.46. 

The standing height desk is located by the window in the far corner of the Library.
