Most of the major research funders in the UK have included in their terms and conditions of award a requirement for researchers to acknowledge in any publication the support received from the funder in question. How to acknowledge research funders in journal publications The acknowledgement of funding should take the form of a sentence with the funding agency written out in full, followed by the grant number in square brackets, for example: This work was supported by the Economic and Social Research Council [grant number xxxx]. Multiple grant numbers should be separated by a comma and space. Where the research was supported by more than one agency, the different agencies should be separated by a semi-colon, with "and" before the final funder. For example: This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust [grant numbers xxxx, yyyy]; the Natural Environment Research Council [grant number zzzz]; and the Economic and Social Research Council [grant number aaaa].
