Open Monograph initiatives and resources

A service provided by Edinburgh University Library that supports the publication of academic and student-led Open Access books and journals with no book processing charges (BPCs) for authors.

University of Edinburgh staff can publish their monographs with Edinburgh University Press, with no book processing charges (BCPs) for the author. See the EUP website for information on the subjects in which EUP publishes, and contact details of commissioning editors within those subject areas. All book proposals are subject to EUP’s standard procedure for consideration.

The Open Book Collective brings together open access book publishers, open publishing service providers, and knowledge institutions, including libraries, working in collaboration to secure a more sustainable and equitable future for open access books.

Bloomsbury Open Collections is a collective-action approach to funding open access books which is currently in its pilot phase. Libraries pledge a fee towards making a collection of books open access. Once enough libraries have confirmed participation and the target amount is achieved, the collection is made open access.

The library has signed up to a three  year Open Access Supporter Membership with Central European University Press.  Opening the Future is a monograph subscription model which operates through a collective membership scheme, the membership revenue is used to produce new OA monographs, without forcing authors to find funding for BPCs.

The library has signed up to a three  year Open Access Supporter Membership with Liverpool University Press, this membership will contribute to helping LUP make new releases in the following modern language series' open access without book processing charges (BPCs). Opening the Future is a monograph subscription model which operates through a collective membership scheme, the membership revenue is used to produce new OA monographs, without forcing authors to find funding for BPCs.

Direct to Open allows authors to publish open access regardless of their institutional affiliation or funding. All new MIT Press scholarly monographs and edited collections (~90 titles per year) from 2022 will be made open access via recurring participation fees

The University of Edinburgh subscribes to the Open Book Publishers, OBP provides permanent and free access to books for readers with no book processing charges (BPCs) for the author

University of Michigan Press (UMP) aims to convert at least 75% of its frontlist monographs to open access by the end of 2024, without any author ever having to pay. 

A fully open access and not-for-profit press owned and managed by Scotland’s University Libraries. Scottish Universities Press (SUP) operates on a not-for-profit basis and is supported by subscriptions from participating institutions.
