Freedom in the Archives: Commemorating the 30 year South African Anniversary of the March to Democracy... and Examining Ourselves

Commemorating South Africa's 30-year anniversary of moving to a representative democratic government, you are invited to join Librarian and Historian Elizabeth Williams and Archivist Rachel Hosker for an exploration of the University's archives on the theme of "Freedom".  

Participants will examine sources and engage with discussions about how anti-apartheid activism has been captured, commemorated and continues to drive research in post-apartheid South Africa and beyond. The latter part of the session will incorporate guest speakers from South Africa who will be joining online.  

Centre for Research Collections (CRC): Discussion and Engagement 

The legacy of University alum Lord David Pitt, medical doctor, anti-colonial campaigner, anti-apartheid activist will be profiled discussing their archives and more speakers will be joining from the National Library of Scotland, the University of Pretoria, the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal and the 'Anti-Apartheid Legacy: Centre of Memory and Learning' in London.

Materials under focus will include:

  • University of Edinburgh Institutional Anti-Apartheid Petition.
  • David Pitt papers.
  • George Shepperson papers.
  • Liberation Movement papers (a selection).
