Description: AFTER BEING PROVOKED by Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World newspaper for her unconventional religious ideas, 87-year-old Mary Baker Eddy founded The Christian Science Monitor. In contrast to the yellow journalism of the day, this newspaper’s directive was to “injure no man, but to bless all mankind.” Over the decades, her newspaper has earned many awards for journalistic excellence — including, ironically, several “Pulitzer” Prizes. With the exception of publishing one religious article each day at the request of the pioneering Mrs. Eddy, The Christian Science Monitor provides secular, balanced coverage of international news and events, as a public service. For more than 100 years, its staff writers and correspondents around the world have reported on wars, scientific discoveries, human rights abuses, political campaigns, the arts, the environment, and people trying to make a positive difference.
Coverage: 1908-2006.
