Search engines

A brief guide to some useful search engines.

Tips for search engines

It's worth getting to know at least two search engines - no single one covers everything, and ranking criteria vary between engines.

Start searching by using highly specific search terms. If your terms are too general, you are more likely to get larger numbers of irrelevant results.

Search engines are still evolving rapidly. If you want to find out more about which has the best features for you, consider reading reviews at:

Some search engines

Google

Our favourite: a search engine with limited search features but sophisticated relevance ranking of results.

Google Scholar

This engine is still in beta, but worth a try. It retrieves peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports. It is unclear how up-to-date this database is, however.

Web Crawler

A web robot with large content-based index, combining Google, Yahoo! and others.

Yahoo

Essentially a browsable and searchable subject guide to the Internet. Try Yahoo! UK & Ireland for quickest results.
