Information about LibKey Nomad, a browser extension which provides easy access to full-text content from databases and websites. What is LibKey Nomad?LibKey Nomad is a third party browser extension (produced by “Third Iron”) which generates a floating link at the bottom left-hand corner of webpages. Where this appears, full-text should be available because University of Edinburgh Library pays for access or because the material is openly available to all. Instructions are given in the "Activation for browsers on the open access computers..." section below.For everyone else, LibKey Nomad browser extension can be downloaded from Third Iron’s website to install on staff and personal desktop computers or laptops (Windows and macOS). There are versions of the extension available for several browsers, including Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari.LibKey Nomad is not compatible with mobile, or tablet-based browsers.Installing LibKey NomadDownload and install LibKey Nomad from the Third Iron website. Choose the version of the extension for your preferred browser(s) and follow the installation instructions.When prompted, browse or search for "University of Edinburgh" and select this as the organisation.The Nomad logo will appear in your list of browser extensions. Select the Extensions icon in the top right of your browser window to view your installed extensions.Activation for browsers on the open access computers in the University’s computing labsAlthough the Nomad extension is installed on the open access computers, you have to activate it on each web browser you use. You should only have to do this once, after which, LibKey Nomad will be active for those browsers on any open access computer you log into. Click the button to confirm.When prompted, browse or search for "University of Edinburgh" and select this as the organisation What does LibKey Nomad do?Once you have installed the LibKey Nomad browser extension, a Nomad button will appear when you are searching some databases or publisher websites. The button will provide direct access to full-text PDFs of journal articles, eBooks and other resources. The "Provided by University of Edinburgh" banner indicates that the website is compatible with LibKey Nomad. Further Nomad buttons will appear when you are using the site which will allow quick access to full-text documents. Click on/Select the “Download PDF” button to open the pdf of the full article in a new browser tab.You may be prompted to login in to your University account if you have not already done so. Click on/Select the “View E-book” button to open a new browser tab displaying a webpage with links to the full-text of each chapter.You may be prompted to login in to your University account if you have not already done so. Click on/Select the “Access Options” button to open a DiscoverEd record for the item in a new browser tab. From this DiscoverEd record you can get to the whole work. The absence of a link or button to full-text does not mean the Library has not got what you want. Search DiscoverEd for the journal or book (or source) title to be sure.DiscoverEd The mortar board icon opens a list of choices for exporting details about the article into reference managers or BibTeX format. LibKey Nomad also allows library staff to generate advice banners for some websites, for example to provide details of additional authentication that may be required. These banners can also be used to display time sensitive information about known problems with particular resources.You can hide these information banners by clicking on the X button to the right of the message text. How to switch LibKey Nomad off and onGo to your browser's Extensions area and switch off (or on) the LibKey Nomad extension to disable it (or to enable it again). The procedure varies depending on the browser you are using.Example from Firefox:Use either the settings option for LibKey Nomad in the Extensions area or choose “Manage extensions”.Disable by toggling off.Re-enable by going to your browser’s Extension area and toggling it back on.
