Introduction to Central Library and the resources of the Edinburgh & Scottish Collection [in person event at Central Library, George IV Bridge]

Opened in 1890, Edinburgh Central Library is an architecturally magnificent public library building with strong subject collections, including specialised departments for Music, Art & Design and local history/heritage known as the Edinburgh & Scottish Collection.

This tour and talk will introduce the library's vast resources, such as published and unpublished material on the history, people and culture of Edinburgh. Areas for research are wide-ranging and include primary and secondary sources, which are collected in a variety of formats such as press cuttings, newspapers, maps, photographs, church newsletters, archival and manuscript materials, as well as ephemera such as leaflets and theatre broadsides.

Following the session, participants will have a good knowledge of the building, its collection coverage and how to access material useful for their research. Many of the building's resources are currently not listed on web-based electronic catalogues.
